1 on 1 Grief Support

Are you feeling alone, and unsure how to get back on your feet after the departure of a loved one? We can accompany you to appointments or group activities, help you learn technology, and find grief support groups or activities to connect with community. 

PAST WORK

  • Completed necessary paperwork for a spouse to obtain life insurance within 5 weeks of spouse’s death (Value $14,240) 

  • Applied for and received Employee Charitable Assistance from a client’s employer within 6 weeks of spouse’s death (Value $3,000) 

  • Worked with clients and Tax Preparers to obtain all necessary W2 documentation to receive NJ and Federal Tax Refunds 6 weeks before April 15 due date (Value $2,800) 

  • Worked with clients to obtain Social Security appointments, pre-deliver required paperwork to Social Security office, and receive Survivor Benefits and one-time Funeral Assistance from Social 

Security (Value $910 per month and $255 one time) 

  • Arranged for appointment with trusted Financial Advisors to re-invest Annuity for a higher percentage rate (Value: Initial investment value $130K; already valued at $142K after three months). 

  • Worked with clients and their personal bankers to invest in a CD to obtain ongoing interest on spare cash in Checking Account.  

  • Worked with family members and state Medicaid/Medicare agencies to seamlessly transfer benefits from one state to another for ill individuals (specifically, Virginia to Connecticut & California to New Jersey). 

  • Accompanied and advocated for client with Funeral Services personnel to plan and make decisions regarding burial, cremation, urn selection and other funeral related services. 

  • Set up and established a payment plan for Prepaid Funeral Plan Account (these are available to Medicaid recipients, FYI). 

  • Completed a free, on-line Testamentary Will with client (New Jersey approved) and arranged for Notary signature. 

  • Reviewed and discussed Five Wishes with clients.  

TOOLBOX

  • Provide weekly musical entertainment to client while homebound or in hospice care (piano and singing based on client requests) 

  • Stay with hospice or homebound patient so that family/caregiver can go shopping and have some “me time.” 

  • Write letters to loved ones for someone who can no longer write. 

  • Listen to stories, look at family photographs, ask about favorite activities and trips, etc. 

  • Play board games and/or on-line games together. 

  • Do crafts, crossword puzzles, play Wordle and Spelling Bee together. 

  • Go for walks (or wheels) or sit on the balcony when weather permits. 

  • Talk about and learn about nature, theater, entertainment, movies, music, hobbies, cooking, animals, etc. 

EXAMPLES

  • Foster independence by teaching clients how to use banking and other applications on their phone/iPad, how to email and text, etc.  

  • Set up a new Gmail or other email account and provide tutorial information on how to use related online services 

  • Help purchase a new iPad or laptop, set it up and teach the basics of using it. 

  • Attend medical appointments, assist with follow ups and medication set-ups; take notes and/or communicate with family members if desired. 

  • Refer affected client and/or child(ren) to local grief resources. 

  • Talk about and discover local activities, book clubs, volunteer opportunities, etc. 

  • Attend craft-making sessions and group activities with someone who may not want to go alone. 

  • Recommend virtual and local in-person group exercise, yoga, meditation sessions, etc. 

  • Recommend books or shows that provide relevant information or support. 

  • Provide non-judgmental companionship, emotional support and empathy.
